This collection of critical essays is devoted to literary Modernism. The first part explores Modernism as a European phenomenon, including essays on the Berlin Theatre, Edvard Munch, and Beckett. The second part investigates the manifestations of Modernism in Scandinavian literature in general, and in the works of individual authors such as Karen Blixen, Knut Hamsun, and Dag Solstad.
