About the Author
Jane C. Walker lives and writes in Midlothian, Virginia. She holds degrees in Elementary and Secondary Education (B.S., The University of Rhode Island) and Reading (M.A., University of Richmond). A former public school reading teacher, Ms. Walker believes that biographies can and should bring out the personalities of the individual honored and breathe life into history. John Tyler is Ms. Walker's second biography of an American president, a subject in which she has an intense interest because she is indirectly related to four of them: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Millard Filmore, and Ulysses Grant.

He was educated at he College of William and Mary, became a plantation farmer himself, practiced law, and went into politics. Tyler was the first American president to have been born after the American Revolution, and his development took place in the national and political context of a young country seeking to define and develop itself. State sovereignty, the national bank, western expansion, and slavery were important issues of the times. Tyler, a man of principle, placed the interests of the nation before those of his own political party at a time when national growth and maturation were playing out.
