From Booklist
The Challengers of the Unknown were four men who devoted their lives to risk-taking adventure after they survived a plane crash that should have been fatal, since they thought of themselves as living on borrowed time, anyway. As this revival of the old series opens, the now middle-aged, semiretired Challengers are ordered to disband after a tragic accident. Forced to accept faded celebrity and create new lives, one becomes a Hollywood action star, another a mercenary, and a third delves into the mystic arts. But the reappearance of a former foe and the need to rediscover meaning in their lives prompt the team to reunite. This retread didn't make much of a splash when first published in 1991, which explains the wait to be collected, but it was the first teaming of writer Loeb and artist Sale, who went on to bigger projects, separately and collaboratively. This initial pairing demonstrates that Loeb's capacity to effectively reimagine hoary concepts and Sale's clean art and imaginative storytelling were there from the beginning. Gordon Flagg
