From Publishers Weekly
Although Texas real estate developer Beau McGarrity is suspected of shooting his wife, he isn't charged because policewoman Alice Parker has compromised the investigation by tampering with the evidence. Nevertheless, he stalks and threatens financial planner Susanna Galway, wife of the Texas Ranger who turned Alice in. Stuck in a marital stalemate, Susanna doesn't tell her headstrong husband, Jack, that Beau has visited her. She also neglects to mention that she has recently made a fortune in the stock market. Instead, she flees north to her feisty grandmother's, then heads with her grandmother and twin daughters for a secluded Adirondack cabin. When both Beau and Alice pursue her there, the women are pulled even deeper into a web of violence and intrigue. Inevitably, Jack and a fellow Ranger arrive on the scene to save the day. The plot is confusing at times, and Susanna's financial secrecy will make it difficult for readers to sympathize with her. Indeed, what kind of middle-class woman could make $10 million in this market, much less fail to mention it to hubby? Still, Neggers's (The Carriage House) characteristically brisk pacing and colorful characterizations sweep the reader toward a dramatic and ultimately satisfying denouement. About the Author
Carla Neggers has always had a red-hot imagination, even as a young girl growing up on her family’s ninety-acre farm in rural Massachusetts. A true New Englander, Carla sets most of her novels in the Northeast, sharing with her readers all the wonders of the Atlantic seaboard. "I learned to love the outdoors when I was a young child following rocky brooks, climbing trees, taking my little brothers out fishing. We even had our own ice-cold swimming holes! It's that sense of wonder -- the delight of discovering all that this region has to offer -- that I try to convey in my novels," says the author. For her latest novel, The Cabin, which is set in Boston and in the Adirondack Mountains, Carla didn't have to stray far from her own backyard for inspiration. "I wrote The Cabin during the snowiest winter in 40 years, so all I had to do was strap on my snowshoes and experience the cold firsthand," says the author. "It amused me to put a Southerner -- especially a Texas Ranger -- in the snow!" This award-winning, bestselling author wrote her first book at the age of 23. Since then, Carla has become well-known for her unique blend of fast-paced suspense and romance. "I always wanted to be a writer," Carla explains, "but I decided that it wasn't the most practical of professions. Instead, I decided to focus on music, taking French horn lessons from members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. I was pretty good at the horn, but the required voice classes I had to take in college did me in. So I switched to my first love, writing." Since then, this magna cum laude graduate of Boston University has established herself as a respected member of the literary community. In addition to writing more than 40 novels, Carla has written articles for newspapers in New England and New York State. She is a past president of Novelists, Inc., the only writers' organization devoted exclusively to multipublished authors of popular fiction. No stranger to the difficulties of balancing work and relaxation, the busy writer tours the country teaching workshops on creativity -- and how to achieve synergy between hours spent working and precious playtime. In her free time, Carla is a member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Burtch-Udall Homestead, an historic, pristine house built in 1786, which the state of Vermont is preparing to open to the public. She also likes to snowshoe, kayak, hike and cross country ski.
