Introduction A commission to photograph the main images for a new edition of the classic The Joy of Sex led to this book. The opportunity gave my wife, Wendy, and me our first professional experience of photographing nude figures, and the job also vitally depended on the use of digital photography. Due to a last-minute decision to change the photography in the book (all of which had been shot and designed), our first day in the studio was actually the day the finished files of the book were scheduled to be at the printer. Enter the digital camera to the rescue. As I photographed the models, the art directors were making their selections and giving me feedback nearly in real time -- in other words, almost as I was shooting. By the time I was coiling up the cables for the lights, the art directors had finalized their selection. Thanks to digital-camera technology, we slipped just one day behind the original schedule. It was a stunning demonstration of the power, convenience and efficiency of digital photography. It also introduced me to another kind of photography -- one that celebrated the human form. I have always been drawn to the beautiful, and I love photography for its ability to commune with beauty as well as providing a means of sharing it. This book is for couples who want to share their joy in one another through photography. It is not a book about nude photography or the "art" of it, as that is a more impartial, arguably more objective, approach. Nude photography keeps art at the forefront, with the emphasis on "photography," while erotic portraiture is unashamedly about the erotic. In this latter approach, the erotic is an element -- if not indeed the quintessence -- of the beauty of a person. And the erotic can be expressed in many ways, all of which portray a person s varied sides and forms. This is what we will be exploring together in this book. I use "we" because this book was written by a couple for couples -- most of the text is mine but Wendy, my wife and partner, has added her own observations, helping to make the point of view a well-rounded one. Taking nude photographs of a loved one can bring out new dimensions in and add depth to the experience of your relationship -- if only because, at times, it will be testing your trust in each other and challenging your inhibitions. But it can also boost self-confidence and pride in yourself. So go now: expose yourself, and trip that shutter. TA and WA
