Sondheim's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical concerns the problems of artistic creativity as experienced by the French painter Georges Seurat and his fictional great-grandson, also an artist. Both men want to create art that is unique to them and discover that the process is accompanied by critical disparagement and the dissolution of personal relationships. Even without Sondheim's score and the stunning sets that graced the Broadway production, the play's witty lyrics and dialogue transform a somewhat limited theme. The show's recent airing on cable TV, soon to be repeated on PBS, may spark interest in this volume, which certainly belongs in all serious theater collections. Eric W.
