Book Description
Before the kids sit down at the computer or turn on the television, hand them Wizards, where they can spend the night next door to a man-eating troll, accompany a boy on his first day at wizard school, or take a ride on the North Wind. The Harry Potter series has created a hunger for great fantasy literature amongst children and their parents, many of whom have never read such masters of the medium as C. S. Lewis, T. H. White, Roald Dahl, or E. Nesbit. Now the editors of the Adrenaline series have moved into a new genre with the same attention to great stories, great characters, and great writing that has made Adrenaline the most successful series of its kind. In addition to the above writers, Wizards draws upon a rich load of forgotten classics (without which there would be no Harry Potter) by such authors as Jane Yolen, George MacDonald, Frances Hodgson Burnett, A. Philippa Pearce, Nicholas Stuart Gray, John Bellairs, and Edward Eager.

Card catalog description

FROM THE CRITICS

KLIATT

Wizards is a collection of excerpts from many popular, and perhaps forgotten, books that deal with wizards, witches and people in unlikely places. If one wanted to do a short story unit on fantasy this book would be a good choice. It is also a good leaping-off point to expose students and readers to some books of which they might not be aware. For the Harry Potter fans that cry, "There's nothing else out there!," Wizards would help fill the void. I especially liked reading some of the excerpts from T.H. White's Arthur legends. I would recommend this book for junior high and high school libraries. I will use it in my class to introduce my students to the fantasy genre. Category: Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror. KLIATT Codes: JSA—Recommended for junior and senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2001, Avalon, Thunder's Mouth Press, 320p. illus. bibliog., Ages 13 to adult. Reviewer: Stacey Conrad; Middle School Reading Teacher, Palmyra, MO
