From School Library Journal
Grade 3-7-Each of these slim volumes introduces a specific event, looks at its origins, and describes how it came to be a rodeo standard. Barrel Racing, for example, can be traced back to the ancient Assyrians. However, the author clearly shows how rodeo as we know it grew out of the cowboy and ranch cultures of the 1800s. The basic rules of each event are discussed, and some of the more famous champions are mentioned. Sherman opens each volume with a description of the action, written in the breathless tone of a live announcer. Readers are given a small sense of what it would be like to be in the stands watching and some of the dangers involved. Clearly labeled, full-color photos of the rodeo stars in action appear in all three books. Each one includes a list of association addresses related to the sport, a list of champions, and a very brief index. Useful additions wherever there is an interest in rodeo.Tim Wadham, Maricopa County Library District, Phoenix, AZ Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.
