Featuring 500 new terms plus hundreds more updated and expanded entries, the 21st edition of Newton's Telecom Dictionary weighs in at over four times larger than any other telecom and IT dictionary, and includes wireless, broadband, VoIP, RFID, and fiber optics terms.
Packed with over 22,400 definitions, it explains technical concepts in non-technical language that anyone can understand. It's used by more leading technology companies for training and employee orientation than any other text.
Four bonus sections include: Harry Newton's favorite money-saving tips for telecom, computing, and more; what happens when telecom services are suddenly free?a vision for this business in the 21st century; how you should orient your precious telecom budget in today's tight times; disaster recovery planning to protect your computing and telecom resources.
Most dictionaries are updated every ten to twenty years. Not this one. Newton updates this dictionary every day and issues a new, expanded, improved and updated edition every ear. This edition is current as of Spring 2005.
About the Author
Harry Newton has spent 34 years studying, writing, lecturing and investing in telecommunications and technology. He founded key telecom magazines--LAN (now Network), Teleconnect, Call Center, Computer Telephony and Technology Investor. He also founded the trade shows, Computer Telephony Conference and Exhibition (CT Expo) and Call Center Demo. He sold his telecom publishing group in September, 1997 to concentrate on writing. Newton has an MBA from the Harvard Business School and an Economics degree from the University of Sydney, Australia, where he was born. He is not an engineer, but wishes he were. He wrote this dictionary to teach himself his rst loves--telecom and technology. In this dictionary, Newton explains complex technology in non-technical, business language. He believes it's critical to understand what the technology does, what its benefits are and the key tips to using and installing it. That's what this dictionary does.
Newton's Telecom Dictionary FROM OUR EDITORS
The Barnes & Noble Review
Few industries offer as many bewildering terms and acronyms as telecom. But few industries have a book as remarkable as Newtonメs Telecom Dictionary. Harry Newtonメs done everything, knows everything, and can explain all of it. His unique sense of humor actually makes this stuff fun. And heメs kept on keepinメ on, through divestiture, deregulation, dot-coms, and now 21 annual editions.
Whatever you want/need to know, itメs here: wireless, Internet, broadband, VoIP, GPS, RFID, even the money side of telecom (Among other things, Newtonメs now a venture capitalist). Youメll find 22,000-plus definitions. And many of them go way beyond what youメd expect, telling why things work the way they do (or why they donメt work the way they ought). Whether youメre a telecom engineer, a marketer, or モjustヤ a customer, Harryメs written your one indispensable reference. Again. Bill Camarda, from the April 2005 Read Only
FROM THE PUBLISHER
Why? Because it's impossible to keep up. Newton adds, changes, updates and expands over 100 definitions a week. No other industry changes as fast. No other industry has more confusing terms. If you're NEW or OLD to this industry, you'll use this dictionary. It not only defines the terms and the acronyms. It tells you what the term is, how it works, how you use it, what its business benefits are and how it fits into the scheme of things. This is not a common dictionary. It's far closer to an encyclopedia.
Newton's Telecom Dictionary is unlike any other technical reference you've ever read. First, it assumes that you, the reader, are not technical. Second, it assumes you want to fully understand the term in business terms. So it not only defines the term, but it provides "Buying Checklists," replete with warnings. Salesman use this book to understand their product's benefits. Users use this book to get a handle on conflicting technologies. Bosses use this dictionary to get more than enough info to be dangerous. Consultants use this book to glean higher fees. And lawyers actually use this book in court.
Every "new" telecom company from Intel to Microsoft to Novell, from Apple to National Semiconductor, from IBM to Motorola, from Natural MicroSystems to Dialogic, from Sun to Quest, uses this dictionary for training. All the traditional telecom companies, including AT&T, MCI, Sprint, Lucent, Nortel (Northern Telecom), Bell Atlantic, Rockwell, BellSouth, Ericsson and GTE, have contributed their company's definitions. As a result, Newton's Telecom Dictionary has truly become an industry-standard dictionary.

Now in a completely updated, revised and expanded seventeenth edition, the Newton's Telecom Dictionary continues to be an invaluable dictionary of terms, words, and concepts relevant to telecommunications, networking and the Internet. One particular virtue of this immensely useful reference is Harry Newton's introduction "Where The Telecom, Networking, Fiber, Internet, Web Explosion Is Taking Us". No professional, academic, or community library computer or Internet reference collection can be considered up-to-date without the inclusion of this latest edition of Newton's Telecom Dictionary as a core title.
