Prologue July 1695, Grayson Point, Massachusetts The thunder cackled like an evil witch at the height of a satanic ritual. The rain pelted against the thin sheet of glass as beautiful twenty-year-old Sarah Grayson stared in horror at her new husband. Damen Baron approached his young bride with a smile touching his thin lips. A flash of lightning illuminated the centuries-old creature, and Sarah wondered how she could have ever found this grotesque animal attractive. "You tremble, my love. Do you fear me?" Damen asked and rested his thin arm against the support beam that held up the roof of the three-story inn. Sarah cowered away from the man she supposedly loved and ducked under one of the rafters. "You are the devil in disguise. I fear no evil!" Sarah screamed over the howling wind. Damen arched a curious eyebrow and smoothed down a silken strand of his shoulder-length blond hair. "Such harsh words you speak, my love. I am not evil, but rather horribly misunderstood," he replied in a calm voice as he pushed off the wooden beam and took a step toward the redhead. Sarah shook her head as a tear slid down her milky cheek. A sudden gust of wind blew open the window and caused the terrified woman to scream. In the brief moment that Sarah was off-guard, Damen was by her side. "YYou are evil. You killed the man I was betrothed to," she gasped as Damen took her arm. Damen leaned his head to the side as he thought about Samuel Gooding, the town lawyer. A smile played on his handsome face as he remembered the way Samuel had screamed like a woman while Damen had drained the red life force from the thirty-year-old man. "Yes, I did take his life, but if it will put you at ease, I did not enjoy the experience. He tasted of rum," Damen whispered in her ear and fought the urge to sink his starving teeth into the pulsating vein in her neck. Sarah whimpered and closed her emerald-colored eyes. "You drink the blood of others, do you not?" she asked, in fear of what the answer might be. Damen was silent and Sarah knew the answer. With every ounce of strength she could muster, she shoved the vampire from her and leapt onto the ledge of the open window. Damen's eyes widened, and he held out his hand for her, waiting. "I will not be your next victim. You kill with no heart or feeling. You will burn in hell!" she admonished and gripped the sides of the window frame. A feeling surged through Damen that he hadn't experienced in nearly one hundred yearsthe feeling of love. He truly loved Sarah Grayson. "My intent is not to hurt you. Hell will have nothing to do with me. I am a creation all and unto myself. I do not kill because I enjoy it. I kill to eat. Do you not slay chickens for the same purpose? To quench your hunger?" he asked in an eerily calm voice. Sarah knitted her eyebrows together, but remained perched on the window ledge. "There is a difference between a chicken and a human being," she replied with a hint of curiosity. Damen shook his head and edged his foot forward. A bolt of lightning flared, followed by a crackle of thunder. Sarah shuddered but kept hold of the sides of the frame. "I do not believe the chicken would agree with you..."
