Israeli wines now making their way to the market demonstrate that 2003 was one of the finest vintage years in recent decades. It was also a year that witnessed unprecedented growth in the local wine industry, with considerable increases in exports and the debut of several medium-sized wineries and quite a few boutique wineries. The days when Israel was primarily producing sweet red wines for sacramental purposes are now long gone, and today Israel is acknowledged as a serious wine producer. Wines are being made from highly prized grape varieties at more than 120 wineries scattered all over the country, from the Upper Galilee and the Golan Heights to the Judean Hills and the Negev Desert. The construction of state-of-the-art wineries, the ongoing import and cultivation of good vine stock from California and France, experimentation with new wine varieties and blends, and the enthusiasm and knowledge of young, well-trained winemakers has enabled the production of quality wines that can compete comfortably with the finest wines of the New World. The purpose of this book is to provide readers with extensive knowledge about the wineries and wines of Israel, and to serve as a convenient guide for selecting and storing local wines. The introduction supplies the reader with the necessary historical and geographical background, while the major part of the guide is devoted to the wines, offering tasting notes and scores for wines that are now on the shelves or scheduled to appear within the next six to nine months, as well as wines that are still stored in the cellars of wine lovers.
