In Muller's 23rd page-turner about scrappy, smart PI Sharon McCone (Dead Midnight, etc.), McCone now heads her own firm, McCone Investigations, a successful, established agency with a growing staff and more work than they can keep up with. But someone from her past would like to see her fail and is willing to take out her close associates to do so. When Julia Rafael, a young investigator whom McCone decided to take on despite her checkered youth, is accused of stealing the credit card of Supervisor Alex Aguilar, the man being groomed to be San Francisco's first Hispanic mayor, the criminal investigation could have dire implications for McCone Investigations. McCone's initial doubts about her employee quickly give way to a determination to discover who's trying to sabotage her company. Muller has a knack for painting a full picture of McCone's life without getting too cutesy (even when discussing cat health care), and readers with a taste for romance will enjoy the direction her relationship with the dashing Hy Ripinsky is taking. While the plot is a bit by-the-book and the high-stakes confrontations could be more compelling, fans should be well satisfied. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Sharon McCone's San Francisco private investigation firm is threatened by the arrest of an employee and a baffling Better Business Bureau complaint. Susan Ericksen gives the various characters in Muller's long-running series solid audio portraits, but Muller's writing does most of the work. Listeners are treated to a nice portrait of San Francisco's Mission District, and the Hispanic characters have considerable spark. As fans know, Sharon is a relentless investigator, and Ericksen's pace retains this intensity. The narrative never lets up, even when Sharon allows herself to examine personal loyalties and commitments. An excellent continuation in a series that listeners can drop into at any point. From Booklist
PI Sharon McCone has barely had time to appreciate the hard-won success of her firm when one of her operatives is arrested, putting the whole agency at risk. Is reserved, almost standoffish Julia Rafael, who has a juvenile record, guilty? If not, why in the world would Alex Aguilar, one of San Francisco's up-and-coming Hispanic politicians, accuse her of stealing his credit card? It doesn't take Sharon long to recognize that it's up to her to sort out the mess, and when she begins digging into Aguilar's past, she finds that he has some unpleasant secrets--one of which leads her to the realization that a vengeful killer is out there, and Julia isn't the real target. Muller's plotting isn't quite as tidy as usual (she has to stretch pretty far to bring everything in line by the end), but once again she gives us a solid slice of a San Francisco community and a protagonist with character. Fans of the sturdy, ongoing series will be especially pleased with the final scene, which opens the way for a new chapter in McCone's personal life. Stephanie Zvirin

The arrest of her newest operative for credit-card theft jeopardizes the apparently rosy future of McCone's Investigations, but Sharon McCone musters the best legal help available. Operative Julia Rafael has overcome a background that includes a juvenile record; however, a recent case she handled for an ambitious Latino city supervisor backfired. Sharon investigates immediately and finds that the supervisor is not all that he appears to be. So, who really stole the credit card, and is the real object to shut Sharon down? Smooth prose, a diverting plot, and diverse characters makes this 23rd McCone mystery a great read. Muller is married to crime writer Bill Pronzini (see the review of his The Alias Man, p. 123) and lives in northern California. Kirkus Reviews
Sharon McCone, one of San Francisco's busiest, feistiest shamuses tackles her 23rd case. It's been a banner year for McCone Investigations (Dead Midnight, 2002, etc.) until trainee p.i. Julia Rafael is handcuffed and jailed for credit-card fraud. Out to prove her innocent of brandishing Alex Aguilar's plastic at better mail-order establishments everywhere, McCone gets both a new incentive and a new obstacle when the regulatory board, holding McCone responsible for her operative's behavior, considers suspending her license and shutting down her agency. Julia insists that she's too small a fish to command such a complex frame-up. So McCone and her office gang ask instead who has it in for the boss. At length they find ties between Aguilar, that respected Latino do-gooder and potential mayoral candidate, and the wildly vengeful R.D., the drug nabob McCone sent away long years ago. Three will die, two more will be shot at, and McCone herself will respond to a creepy "Knives at midnight" ultimatum before McCone Investigations and all its employees are safe to roam the darker streets of northern California and the boss can finally say yes to the question her lover Hy Ripinsky has asked her at least a hundred times. One of Muller's better efforts, with a bonus for cat fanciers in need of step-by-step instructions on caring for a diabetic feline.
