Mortimer: Collected Plays Volume One

FROM THE PUBLISHER

"John Mortimer's first stage play was The Dock Brief, an hilarious encounter in a prison cell between an unsuccessful murderer and an even more unsuccessful barrister. It was first performed with another short play, What Shall We Tell Caroline?, and has since been performed all around the world, made into a film starring Peter Sellers, and acted by two convicted criminals in Alcatraz." Lunch Hour, a poignant three-hander about stolen moments of intimacy and ill-fated pretence, was first presented alongside short plays by Harold Pinter and N. F. Simpson in a theatre programme called Three. A Voyage Round My Father is a celebration of an irrascible, inspiring, eccentric and original father and recalls some of the absurdities of the author's own youth. The father was portrayed on the stage by Alec Guinness and on television by Laurence Olivier. John Mortimer's next play was Collaborators, the story of a perilously insecure and yet exclusive marriage.
