Book Description
Covering every Italian Spaghetti Western--mainly the good but also the bad and the ugly--this is an authoritative, entertaining and comprehensive companion to the implausible international fusion of producers, directors, actors and composers who created the mythical Spaghetti West under the most improbable circumstances. Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy led the field but many more major Spaghetti Westerns were made by important directors, including Sergio Corbucci's Navajo Joe, Carlo Lizzani's The Hills Run Red, Duccio Tessari's A Pistol for Ringo. Combining analysis, information and lively anecdotes, this popular guide explores all of these films through the biographies and filmographies of key personnel, stories of the films' making, their locations and sets, sources, musical scores, detailed cast information and many illustrations, including original posters and stills.

FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

As both a fan and a scholar of the Italian spaghetti Western, Hughes (The American Indian Wars) makes an ideal guide to the genre. Having selected 20 representative films, he examines each by providing such information as a full cast list, an account of the film's making, box office reception, lasting influence, and an analysis of the musical score. In analyzing Sergio Leone's "Dollars" trilogy, he not only relates the familiar story of star Clint Eastwood's subsequent rise to fame, but he also reveals that in the last film, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Leone drew from sources like Civil War photographer Matthew Brady and Buster Keaton's The General. Christopher Frayling's Spaghetti Westerns: Cowboys and Europeans from Karl May to Sergio Leone covers similar territory but is more suitable for an academic audience. Hughes, while not exactly writing for beginners, will please fans and scholars alike in both public and academic libraries with his wealth of knowledge and easygoing style; recommended.-M.C.
