FROM THE CRITICS
John L. Skosey
This book, sponsored by the World Health Organization and the International League Against Rheumatism, consists of a collection of reviews by multiple authors. It aims to survey currently available knowledge concerning the prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal disorders. Given their worldwide prevalence and impact on humanity, this is a worthwhile goal. Its title might lead the casual reader to expect more conclusions than are possible on the basis of current understanding. However, it does provide a comprehensive review and assessment of current knowledge. The book will appeal primarily to rheumatologists and others directly involved in the care and study of patients with rheumatic diseases. Health policy planners and others concerned with lessening the impact of this major group of diseases also will find it interesting and valuable. An international group of credible and respected authorities in the fields of rheumatology and epidemiology comprise the contributors to this volume. The international flavor of this collection is reflected in the wide range of conditions that are considered. They range from disorders such as repetitive strain syndromes, commonly seen in industrialized countries, to esoteric (from the point of view of the Western reader) diseases associated with protozoal infestations in tropical climates. Given the myriad of conditions with which rheumatic syndromes are associated, the book serves as a concise review of medicine. This book contains a wealth of practical information for the primary care physician as well as for the rheumatologist. Its cosmopolitan outlook provides an opportunity for one to think beyond the confines of restricted individualexperience. Lessons gleaned from consideration of diseases that are amenable to prophylactic intervention may stimulate the generation of concepts applicable to diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and other systemic connective tissue diseases that have thus far eluded attempts at prevention.
