The London Group 1913-1939 is the first detailed record of the largest society devoted to the development of modern art in Britain. The Group's founder members included Walter Bayes, Robert Bevan, Malcolm Drummond, Jacob Epstein, Harold Gilman, Spencer Gore, Duncan Grant, Wyndham Lewis, J. B. Manson, John Nash and Ethel Sands. As the spearhead of modernism in Britain the London Group evoked heated controversy. However, by 1937 the News Chronicle was describing the Group as 'The Intelligent Man's Royal Academy'. Drawing on previously unpublished sources, this study lists all member exhibits and non-member exhibitors at the Group's shows between 1914 and 1939, together with brief biographies of the artists. Appendices republish the prefaces and forewords to many of the Group's exhibitions.
