'People often ask "What is the nature of Englishness? What are the special characteristics of English people?" In 1998, there was a TV discussion on the subject when a number of 'personalities' were asked to give their views. The famous English cricket umpire, Dickie Byrd, now retired, mentioned the following 'key words' which he thought described Englishness: Beer, Honesty, Bulldog-type, Royal Family, Cricket, the Weather, and used phrases such as "comradeship and friendship", "not giving up when things get tough".'

The Simple Guide To England: Customs And Etiquette

FROM THE PUBLISHER

The British may be our cousins across the Atlantic, but the potential for family misunderstanding remains. To help travelers enjoy the new, more relaxed "Blair Britain" while being aware just how much of the traditional British reserve still exists, Peter Hobday has updated his indispensable guide to the inscrutable English. Travelers for business and pleasure will welcome his insights into such quintessentially British topics as royalty and class, animals and pets, and the all-important pub. Here, too, is the lowdown on food, first names, money and business, politics, approaches to friendship and sex, with an invaluable language guide to English as it's spoken in its birthplace.
