Freeform crochet may have had its origin in the work of Sylvia Cosh and James Walters, who discussed in their Crochet Workbook what they termed doodling or scrumbling with myriad yarns to create a textured freeform fabric. Other fiber artists then began to extend the idea to knitting, and in 2002 Australian knitwear designer Prudence Mapstone self-published the first book on the topic, Freeform: Serendipitous Design Techniques for Knitting & Crochet. Dowde, another Aussie, now brings this exciting technique to a wider market of crocheters and knitters with a colorful book that combines instruction in freeform with a variety of inspirational projects that will appeal to intermediate and advanced skill levels. Highlights of the book include a chapter on colors and color interactions, practice sessions playing with the crocheted and knitted fragments, and a selection of projects including bags, shawls, hats, and scarves.
