Ritualist on a Tricycle: Frederick Goldsmith, Church, Nationalism and Society in Western Australia, 1880-1920

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Ritualist on a Tricycle is a biography of Frederick Goldsmith, Dean of Perth (1888 - 1904) and the first Anglican bishop of Bunbury. Conservative and English born, he paradoxically became a champion of Australian nationalism. His persistent calls for the abolition of the title "Church of England" in Australia, particularly in the Anglican Church's national body, created debates which form our understanding of Australian self-rule movements of the time.

A detailed study of city and rural Anglicanism, for the gold rush to the end of World War I, Ritualist on a Tricycle examines a changing approach to devotional life and church politics in the context of British imperial values and growing Australian nationalism.
