FROM THE CRITICS

This handsomely packaged, two-volume set, now in its second edition, has been updated in every way. There is a detailed and well-referenced text in Volume 1 and a photographic reference in Volume 2. This set serves as a reference for physicians working in the area of child abuse and neglect. The editors fulfill their pledge to be comprehensive. Although the primary target audience is physicians, the editors have constructed a reference that is good for a multidisciplinary array of child abuse workers: lawyers, social workers, nurses, and others. The editors and contributors are well-regarded national experts who have a wealth of experience to share. The publication includes information on all stages of the process from the initial identification of abuse to the final court proceedings. All forms of abuse are covered including prenatal abuse, physical, sexual, neglect, and psychological. There are chapters with a focus on the techniques of interviewing, engaging in play therapy, and conducting child death review teams. Each chapter is well written and adequately documented with references. There are a good number of illustrations in Volume 1, even though Volume 2 is a complete atlas. The quality of the photographs and radiographs are excellent. A heavily coated paper stock allows for highly detailed reproduction. The only minor problem with the publication is the illogical order of the chapters. The sexual abuse exam chapters appear before the interviewing chapter and the play therapy chapter seems to be dropped into the middle of nowhere. A good table of contents and index help to supercede these minor problems. This book is what the editors claima comprehensive and easyto use reference about the multifaceted problem of abuse and neglect. It is the only text that comes with a photographic reference setting it apart from other texts. Any healthcare provider interested in child abuse should have this text on their shelves.
