Doody Review Services
Reviewer: Daniel B Hier, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)Description: This is a brief pocket-sized book on the diagnosis and management of headaches. Purpose: The author has sought to summarize his approach to the management of headaches in a way that can be easily grasped by other practicing clinicians. Audience: This book is aimed primarily at non-neurologists and non-headache specialists who want practical advice on the management of headaches. It will appeal to general internists and family practitioners who encounter patients with headaches. Features: This is a practical and easy to read text. It reflects primarily the author's approach and that of the Diamond Headache Clinic. It covers diagnosis and classification of headaches and then reviews management of migraine, cluster, and tension headache in detail. The emphasis is on practical information that will assist in the management of headache. The scientific and pathophysiological basis underlying diagnosis and management is downplayed. Assessment: This book is brief and to the point. It is more similar to Peatfield and Campbell's Fast Facts - Headaches (Health Press Limited, 2000) or Robbins' Management of Headache and Headache Medications, 2nd edition (Springer-Verlag, 2000). It is much briefer and less sophisticated than headache encyclopedias such as Silberstein's Wolff's Headache and other Head Pains , 7th edition (Oxford University Press, 2001), Spierings' Headache (Butterworth-Heinemann, 1998), or Lance and Goadsby's Mechanism and Management of Headache, 6th edition (Butterworth-Heinemann, 1998). This book will appeal to internists and family practitioners who want concise help with the management of their headache patients. Neurologists and headache specialists will want to turn to more detailed treatises.
