   Book Review

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7-Biographical sketches of ballerina Maria Tallchief, sculptor Louise Nevelson, singer Marian Anderson, musician Nadia Boulanger, photographer Margaret Bourke-White, opera singer Beverly Sills, painter Mary Cassatt, and architect Julia Morgan. The brevity of each chapter is problematic. The entries are so short that any sense of the individual's character is lost. Readers are told of the women's accomplishments and milestones, but they never come to life. The simplistic presentations are disjointed at times, and some fictionalization creeps into the text. Several quotations are included, but they are never documented. The index and the bibliography are minimal. As a whole, the book exhibits a pronounced lack of scholarship, which is important regardless of the age of the intended audience.Marilyn Heath, Greenwood High School, SC Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
In a useful but dutiful collection, Stux offers brief biographies of eight women who made recognized contributions to the arts during the 20th century. All of the womendancer Maria Tallchief, photographer Margaret Bourke-White, singers Marian Anderson and Beverly Sills, pianist Nadia Boulanger, painter Mary Cassatt, architect Julia Morgan, and sculptor Louise Nevelsonare fairly well known; highlights of their achievements are noted, as well as rewards and honors received. Some of the biographies are quite interesting, but the coverage is uneven and the choice of subject is not always apparent: Stux does not make Sills's contributions to opera seem as pioneering as those of Cassatt or Morgan, the latter of whom left a legacy of more than 700 buildings she had designed in an era when women in the field of architecture were scarce.
