FROM THE CRITICS
Thomas P. Guck
This is a concise overview of the psychophysiology of stress, the symptoms of distress and stress-related disorders, the diagnosis of stress and strain, and the preventive management of stress and treatment of stress and strain. The purpose is to provide primary care physicians and their patients with practical information so they can recognize the signs of stress, establish appropriate short-term treatment, and develop long-term preventive strategies. The book is written for primary care physicians and their patients. Mental health professionals who work in healthcare settings will also find it valuable. The authors have written extensively on the role of stress on organizations and individuals. This is a condensed version of their larger work. The first three chapters are an overview of the psychophysiology of stress; assessment of stress-related symptoms and disorders is included. The remaining chapters are focused on prevention and medical and psychological management of stress. Figures and tables are used effectively to present a large amount of material in a concise and organized manner. A glossary of key stress-related terms is helpful. References, although not comprehensive, are representative. This book is excellent for the Fast Facts format. The strength is that it is easy to read. Healthcare workers and their patients could use the book together to reduce the effects of stress. It compares favorably with any short overview presentation of stress.
