Unseen Landscapes is the first of the Lowry's exhibitions to show L. S. Lowry along side other major figures of 20th century British art and artists working today. The starting point has been Lowry's 'empty landscapes', regarded as some of his most powerful and inventive works. New works by leading contemporary artists are shown alongside rarely seen drawings, paintings and sculptures by 20th century masters, including loans from major national collections. Unseen Landscapes brings together work from across eighty years that explores the isolated expanses of the British coastline and countryside. Ian Jeffrey's essay celebrates the continuing inspiration artists find in wilderness and the powerful visions they create.
