Howard Hodgkin is respected internationally as one of the most significant painters - and certainly the greatest colourist - working in Britain today. 'My pictures', he has said, 'are narrative paintings which describe specific moments and very definite people.' These paintings of remembered experiences - the product of years of anxious effort - are layered, sweeping compositions of magnificent colour and vivacious style. The works included here are large-scale paintings from the last two decades; a number have only recently been completed and are illustrated for the first time. The essays that accompany the paintings have been written by the eminent art historians, Robert Rosenblum and Richard Kendall, who have long been admirers of Howard Hodgkin's work.
