The Sun Rising Through Vapour: Turner's Early Seascapes

FROM THE PUBLISHER

This exhibition brings together some of Turner's most luminous early seascapes and focuses on his painting The Sun rising through Vapour in the Barber Institute's collection. It also explores Turner's debt to the Old Masters and earlier marine painters, and his influence on contemporary British artists, such as Augustus Wall Callcott and Richard Parkes Bonington. The catalogue discusses key themes within Turner's early career, notably the concept of patronage and ownership of art, as well as the similarities and differences between the works exhibited, which throw new light on the development of Turner's art and artistic theories. Nearly 30 works of art are reproduced, including major loans from the National Gallery, Tate Britain, the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, USA.
