From the Publisher The original edition of The Remarkable Rainforest has been our best seller for ten years. In response to enthusiasm from teachers and students throughout the nation, we have produced this new updated, enlarged edition. The book was an excellent resource before. Now it is invaluable to anyone who wants to teach or learn about the remarkable rainforests.
From the Author I wrote The Remarkable Rainforest (and my newest book, Saving the Rainforest with Cammie and Cooper, for younger children)because I believe that the destruction of rainforests is one of the most critical environmental problems that our Earth is facing. I did extensive research before writing the books, including exploring rainforests in Costa Rica, Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico. I loved sharing some of my adventures in my "Rainforest Journal" in The Remarkable Rainforest. I included dozens of hands-on activities in the book, because I think children have fun learning actively. I hope you enjoy the book and find it a complete resource for learning about the plight of rainforests and how we can help save them.
From the Inside Flap The Remarkable Rainforest invites children to: Grow a mini-rainforest that makes its own rain Learn how to get a "crocodile eye" Make a paper bromeliad that holds a live tadpole Play "Save the Rainforest," a complete board game with game cards Do nature experiments Go on a rainforest scavenger hunt Learn how to start a rainforest club Enjoy puzzles, riddles, quizzes, and mazes
About the Author Toni Albert, M.Ed., is an award-winning author of forty books. Many of her books are about endangered wildlife and endangered wildlands and reflect her deep concern for the environment. Ms. Albert and her husband Bob Albert have explored rainforests in Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize, and Guatemala. They hiked in the rainforests with experienced guides and traveled by boat through waterways that penetrate the forests. Ms. Albert returned to her home in Pennsylvania, eager to write a book for kids that would communicate the amazing beauty of the rainforests and the critical need to preserve them. "Albert is nationally recognized for her many literary contributions that serve to enlighten and educate children and adults alike regarding environmental concerns. She continues her strong and tireless campaign to teach children how to care for the Earth and its inhabitants." ForeWord Magazine

When we finally hiked into the rainforest, it was like entering a great theater lit with green light. The audience was noisy though. There was a racket of hissing, croaking, calling, buzzing, peeping, and chirping. Toucans chattered in the balcony while an orchestra of insects tuned up strange instruments. I'll tell you the name of the main feature in the rainforest theater: "Escape of the Houseplants." Imagine the philodendron in your living room, growing so slowly and modestly in a small container, suddenly transplanted to its original home in the warm, humid rainforest. We saw monstous philodendrons with leaves as big as bath towels climbing forty feet above the forest floor. What a performance!
