Gr 2-5-These short biographies focus on the home lives and early hints of genius shown by each artist. Written in story format, the texts include brief fictional conversations reflecting the thoughts and feelings of the artists and the people around them. Hart discusses their early difficulties, whether financial in the case of Michelangelo or health-related in the case of Toulouse-Lautrec, describing the artists' birthplaces, early homes, and travels. Hellard's brightly colored and good-humored illustrations blend with reproductions of the artists' juvenile creations, which are worked into the text on appropriate pages. While not as charming and involving as Laurence Anholt's more fictionalized Degas y la pequena bailarina (Degas and the Little Ballerina, Santillana, 1998) and Camille y los girasoles (Camille and the Sunflowers, Santillana, 1997), these titles provide good introductions to the work of important artists. They should make especially good selections for libraries and any bookstores where art books are popular.
