FROM THE CRITICS
Library Journal
Published for an exhibition at the Mus e Luxembourg in Paris, this catalog focuses on Botticelli's paintings from the Golden Age of Lorenzo to the zealotry of Savonarola. In the six essays by noted scholars, Botticelli's paintings are analyzed as a reflection of 15th-century Florence, with its development of humanism as opposed to striving for the classical ideal. Botticelli worked within the context of Renaissance society, and his women are derived from popular pageants for which he and other artists designed banners. Much of Botticelli's imagery was influenced by writers of his day, including Dante, Alberti, Petrarch, Ficino, and the Neoplatonic academy that surrounded the Medici court. A two-part catalog with 120 illustrations follows the essays. Part 1 contains Botticelli's oeuvre exclusively, showing many major masterpieces in beautiful full-page, color reproductions. The second part consists of works by his contemporaries, mostly Filippo Lippi, emphasizing their close relationship. The fully footnoted book includes a detailed chronology and comprehensive bibliography. With its recent scholarship, and with works drawn from collections worldwide, it will be an essential complement for art historians to Ronald Lightbown's authoritative biography, Botticelli.
