PUNTA GORDA -- Of the 10 citrus trees in Rex and Roberta Koch's Punta Gorda Isles yard, only one made it through Hurricane Charley.
But what Charley's winds couldn't topple, a wind-borne bacterium will. The Kochs' lone grapefruit tree is going to fall, a victim of the city's first detected case of citrus canker.
And in coming weeks the state agriculture department will be telling every neighbor within 1,900 feet that their citrus trees will also come down to prevent the disease from spreading. Residents can find out more about their rights and the canker eradication program at a meeting Thursday in Punta Gorda.
