Panama has a population of about 2.8 million and 460,000 vehicles according to the Panamanian Traffic Vehicle Registry. This is the highest per capita car population in Central America. About 70% of the total vehicle population is registered in the Province of Panama. The economy has experienced a significant slowdown in the last two years and new car sales dropped from 34,000 in 1999 to 21,000 in 2000 and are not expected to top 14,000 in 2001.
