Q. I have several hostas in pots that were on my patio this summer. How do I protect the potted hostas over the winter?
Should I put them into the unheated garage? Do they need watering? It I leave them in the snow, the pots will probably crack. Please advise.
A. The best way to over-winter your hostas would be to dig a trench in your garden deep enough to hold the pots. Place the pots into the trench and mulch heavily with shredded leaves, straw, or evergreen branches. In the spring remove the pots and rinse debris off the pots before putting them back onto the patio.
