The United States August 30 blocked a request from Brazil for establishment of a World Trade Organization panel to whether a Florida tax on processed citrus fruit violates global trading rules. U.S. officials told a meeting of the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) that they were "surprised and disappointed" with Brazil's request and believed the two sides could reach a mutually satisfactory solution with further talks on the issue. Brazil can renew its request at the next regular DSB meeting scheduled for October 1, when the request must automatically be accepted.
