From the New England Journal of Medicine, August 7, 2003
This impressively heavy and bulky book is loaded with useful information and impressive photographs and should be added to the pediatric library of all departments, schools, and practitioners' offices. The fourth edition of the Atlas is more comprehensive than previous editions: it has vastly expanded chapters and additional features that make it easier to use than the previous editions. The quality of the illustrations continues to be high, and the tables, figures, radiographs, and photographs are generally of superior quality. Zitelli and Davis's book is, to be sure, a compendium of tables and images, but it also includes a considerable amount of written material to accompany the pictorial content. The selection of photographs is excellent. Most of them are in color, and the...

Book Review
One day, Kansas wakes up grumpy. The other 49 states are stretching, yawning, and pouring maple syrup onto each other's pancakes, but irritable Kansas announces to his kindly neighbor Nebraska that life is dull and changes must be made: "All day long we just sit here in the middle of the country. We never GO anywhere. We never DO anything, and we NEVER meet any NEW states!" Nebraska, sick of hearing North Dakota and South Dakota bicker all the time, agrees to help organize a party for all the states. It's a hit! Late into the evening, Idaho and Virginia get up onto the stage and suggest that all the states change places. What a state of affairs. Minnesota, who switches places with Florida, gets a sunburn. Kansas, having traded places with Hawaii, gets lonely and sings some soggy blues so sad that a shark sheds a mournful...

From Booklist
The goal of this colorful atlas is to help students in grades six through nine "better understand basic geographic concepts and compare and contrast information critical to making global connections." National Geographic atlases are known for their excellent introductory material, and this one is no exception. In fact, more than 50 pages of introductory material precede the maps. These pages cover an array of topics organized under "Physical Systems" and "Human Systems" and expose students to a variety of thematic, political, and physical maps. By comparison, the map section of the atlas seems a bit skimpy. Arrangement is by continent, and information is presented in fairly broad strokes. A box containing "Facts and Figures" and a satellite map kick off each continent's section, followed by a physical map, a political...

All maps are shown in the context of surrounding areas. The plentiful color...

Book Review
The world is an unfathomably big, amazing, and mysterious place. Sometimes, having a little context provides the ticket to understanding. Scholastic's Atlas of the World for children offers a unique approach to comprehending the world. Land area, time differences, life expectancy, car ownership, travel distances, and many other features of every country are compared to those of the United States. How does the length of the Indus River in Pakistan compare to the Mississippi, for example? Did you know that people in the U.S. live, on average, to be 76--but Australians live to be 80, and citizens of Zambia have a life expectancy of only 37 years? American kids, especially, will benefit from this tremendously helpful tool. The atlas also provides more than 80 easy-to-read topographical maps, hundreds of striking color...

Grade 5 Up–A visually stunning and informative introduction to astronomy and stargazing. Opening materials include definitions, polar and equatorial sky maps, and instructions on using the book. The bulk of this spiral-bound volume is arranged chronologically, featuring the part of the sky best observed each month of the year. Each entry focuses on a specific constellation and its component stars and includes a photo of that area of the sky. Six of the pictures have a plastic overlay that shows the outline of the constellation. Interspersed between months are spreads on topics such as the evolution and types of stars, the sun, planets and other solar system objects, nebulae, and galaxies. Review
Doody's : "Overall, the photographs are quite good..." The appendix is organized alphabetically by disease entity. At the top of each page is a one sentence summary of the disorder. I like the conciseness of the book. "...this book does provide a companion for those who like this format and deal with pediatric dermatology."

The book's organization reflects the "tried and true" format of the best-selling "Fitz" Color Atlas: for each condition, there are one to two color photographs coupled with salient points of epidemiology, history, physical exam, differential diagnosis, laboratory and special examinations, disease course and up-to-date treatments. Look for these important highlights: *an extensive collection of exquisite new photographs for each condition...
