Book Review
Learning to use a dictionary is an important skill for young scholars, and MacMillan offers a great edition for 8 to 14 year olds. The Dictionary for Children is sensible, well designed, and illustrated with plenty of pictures. Each letter gets a mini-exploration of its role in sounds and spelling; for example, "B has only one sound in English, as in bad and both, but it is sometimes doubled as in rabbit. The letter B is also silent in some words such as climb, comb, or plumber." Definitions are clear but not oversimplified, and homonyms are identified so that spellers won't be confused: words that sound like flue "are flew and flu." The type is large enough to be readable, and the tone is serious but not pretentious. The...

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4–Informational tidbits appear alongside exquisitely designed pop-up constructions in this visually stunning overview of all things dinosaur. Each spread features a spectacular paper sculpture of a particular species (e.g., Ankylosaurus or Triceratops) along with a brief paragraph of text. Smaller foldout sections, which open like miniature books and also incorporate pop-ups, cover additional topics (Dinosaur Detectives and Mystery Extinction) and introduce other dinosaurs and their characteristics. Rendered in warm earth tones and speckled with splashes of color, the three-dimensional creatures move with a life of their own as they gracefully extend their bodies into a full stretch or lurch toward readers with jaws open wide. Be forewarned: the book is so enticing that children will find it...

From School Library Journal
This annotated bibliography offers more than 500 titles for grades 5 through adult. The entries are organized by genre or topic and arranged alphabetically by author. They include complete bibliographic information, ISBN, price, Fry Reading Level, interest level, and possible uses in and out of the classroom. An introduction outlines the changing need for ESL materials in the United States and explains McCaffery's selection criteria. Titles range from books published and marketed as ESL or adult literacy publications to mainstream young adult materials. The indexes, especially the ethnic-group index, are very useful. One appendix lists distributors of nonprint materials as well as Internet sites. Timeliness is somewhat uneven; most entries have publication dates between 1992 and 1998. A listing on computer...

Book Review
In evaluating a children's dictionary, there are two test words we always check first: "e-mail" and "iguana." After all, if "e-mail" doesn't appear in a dictionary, how up-to-date can it be? And iguanas, well, what kid doesn't want to read all about this "very large tropical American lizard with a ridge of tall scales along its back"? We are happy to report that this fine dictionary is above and beyond our gold standard. Not only are there definitions for each of the test words, there are illustrations for each, as well! This 912-page illustrated dictionary is packed with great information, including world maps on the inside covers, an easy-to-use how-to guide, and a reference section with facts and maps of the continents, pictures of flags from countries around the world, U.S. presidents and vice presidents,...

Gr 3-8-This useful resource presents more than 100 religious, cultural, and national holidays celebrated around the world. Alphabetically arranged, most of the entries run from one half to a full page while a few (Hanukkah, Lent, and Ramadan) are longer. A captioned full-color photograph helps to place each celebration in a cultural context. A section on calendars around the world and a five-year holiday calendar are appended. The many cross-references help children to see the similarities among holidays and cultures. Children Just Like Me: Celebrations! (DK, 1997) is more visually exciting and could possibly be used by younger students because of the visuals, but is not as comprehensive as this title.-Peg Glisson, Mendon Center Elementary School, Pittsford, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information,...

Book Review
The wonderful Aliki Brandenberg has written and illustrated more children's books than many kids have read. (She's got 133 listings right here at Book Review.) This time she brings us a paperback version of her 1990 hardcover Manners, a cheery, funny dissertation on how and, more important, why to be a polite child.

A combination of hilarious, colorful illustrations, comic-bookish playlets such as "You Are Interrupting Again, Leon," some of what a grown up might call role-playing, and miscellaneous other gems, the book adds up to the best child's handbook on manners since the Goops showed up at the end of the 19th century.

[Offered for ages 4 and up, but useful to any child, family, or k-3 classroom.] --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-Explanations and descriptions of major events, people, places, and cultures from A.D. 476-1500. The well-written, alphabetically arranged entries range from "Agriculture," "Alhambra," and "Thomas Aquinas" to "Warfare," "West African Kingdoms," and "Women." Most are about one page in length, with some exceptions, such as "Crusades" and "Islam," which are longer. The information is very basic, which does lead to some generalizations and possible confusion, and cross-references are, on occasion, wanting. For example, "Papacy" lacks a cross-reference to "Christianity" and the entry on the "Reconquest of Spain" might be more easily identifiable under Spain or Moors. Attempts to show a global perspective (rather than just Europe and the Middle East) are weak. There are no time lines, and the text does not...
