From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 3 Up–Forty well-known, well-loved children's book illustrators share memories of a book (and even a comic book) seminal to their development as readers and artists, and offer accompanying pieces of art–re-imagined from those books. From its cozy cover image (created by the late Fred Marcellino) of a cat and mouse companionably enthralled by the open book on which they perch, to the satisfying thumbnail biographies appended, this is a lovingly conceived, cohesive, and distinctively designed treasure. Each spread is dedicated to one of the contributors; half of it is occupied by an art piece, and half by the illustrator's reminiscence, a sidebar featuring a cameo photo-portrait of the artist, and a vividly reproduced image of the cover of the book (or, in Peter Sis's case, of...

How to Write & Illustrate Children's Books and Get Them Published!
Author: Treld Pelkey Bicknell Book Review
Format: Paperback
ISBN: 1582970130
Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours.

Book Review
Though bits and pieces are somewhat outdated ("backspace 10 characters for right-hand margin," a chapter on getting published recommends), this is a fine and quite British introduction to the art of writing and illustrating children's books. Nine writers, illustrators, editors, librarians, and educators present a chapter or two each on such subjects as storytelling, classic children's fiction, contemporary themes in children's literature, illustration, and production. The format doesn't allow much of a chance for any one aspect of the business of children's books to be explored deeply, but the authors' strong affinity for children and their literature will help any potential children's-book creator adopt the right frame of mind for the work. Authors of children's books, says Gabrielle Maunder, must not underestimate the...
Sign Language for Kids: A Fun & Easy Guide to American Sign Language
Author: Lora Heller Book Review
Format: Hardcover
ISBN: 1402706723

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-7–Clear color photos and simple text combine to form an excellent introduction to American Sign Language (ASL). The text begins by introducing the alphabet and numbers through sharp, close-up photos of children demonstrating the signs; in some, arrows indicate the direction of the motions. Other chapters introduce the days of the week, senses, feelings, and animals. Many are useful in everyday situations, including the doctor's office, school, and restaurants. The caption for each illustration describes how to form the letter or sign, sometimes offering a suggestion that will help children remember it. For example, the motion for "girl" is explained this way: "Use your thumb to trace your jaw line, or an old-fashioned bonnet string." The brief, final chapters will help children link words and...

'Roadville' is a white working-class community of families steeped for generations in the life of textile mills; 'Trackton' is a black working-class community whose older generations grew up farming the land but whose current members work in the mills. Macmillan Dictionary for Children

Format: Hardcover
ISBN: 0689866569

Book Review
Learning to use a dictionary is an important skill for young scholars, and MacMillan offers a great edition for 8 to 14 year olds. The Dictionary for Children is sensible, well designed, and illustrated with plenty of pictures. Each letter gets a mini-exploration of its role in sounds and spelling; for example, "B has only one sound in English, as in bad and both, but it is sometimes doubled as in rabbit. The letter B is also silent in some words such as climb, comb, or plumber." Definitions are clear but not oversimplified, and homonyms are identified so that spellers won't be confused: words that sound like flue "are flew and flu." The type is large enough to be readable, and the tone is serious but not pretentious. The...
My Book About Me (Classic Seuss)

Book Review
One of the titles for the younger crowd in the Beginners Books series, My Book About Me has an unusual interactive twist--you make it up as you go along. On each page there's something new to complete, from "I weigh ___ pounds" to "My teeth. I counted them. I have ___ up top. I have ___ downstairs." It's a simple idea, but with a surprising amount of educational value--getting children to name their home country, to recognize and draw in the color of their own eyes, learn their telephone number and address, to name favorite clothes, foods, and colors, and more. Finally, there's a two-page spread where each owner of the book can write his or her own story. Illustrator Roy McKie's style is halfway between the P.D. Eastman of Are You My Mother and the mainstream Seuss of Cat in the Hat and Thidwick: The Big-Hearted Moose....
Kites Sail High: A Book about Verbs (World of Language Series)
Author: Ruth Heller Book Review
Format: Paperback
ISBN: 0698113896
Availability:

From Publishers Weekly
Heller's newest concept book explicates and celebrates verbs of all kinds, in ebullient verses which themselves sail and soar. As in her previous works, the verses are accompanied by bold, gaily colored graphics that are especially striking for their skillful use of pattern and design. More ambitious in scope than her earlier books, however, this one attains a level of textual and conceptual complexity that may, by the end, leave its intended audience behind. The adroit but increasingly difficult verses addressing such points as tense, mood and voice may be of more interest to a parent or teacher than to a child, for whom the book's simpler, beginning pages are likely to hold more direct appeal. Ages 4-8. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable...
